Learning Difficulties

Why do some children seem to have difficulty at school from day one? This is a question asked by many parents and educators, and the answer can be often found in the child's early development. To function academically and socially, we need to be "sensory integrated". Put simply, all the senses must be working together... For example, the eyes need to be functioning correctly in order to track across a line of print. Our muscles need to be developed in order to hold and control writing implements. Our ears need to be processing sound correctly in order to process phonics. Much of the foundation for later learning happens in the first years of life. Putting aside brain injury, chemical abuse and genes, many learning problems can be traced back to the early stages of development. These early building blocks form the base for the rest of the child's development, and research agrees, that if some of these early stages are missed, then the child may have difficulties (academic or social).
